Sildenafil > oral sildenafil

The primary indication of sildenafil is treatment of erectile dysfunction (inability to sustain a satisfactory erection to complete sexual intercourse).

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Finally, it can be used to treat high blood pressure. This formulation is ideal for patients who have difficulty swallowing pills or who need a rapid onset of therapeutic effects. The tablets dissolve quickly in the mouth upon contact with saliva, facilitating convenient administration without the need for water or swallowing, allowing for efficient absorption of the medication through the oral mucosa. This makes it an ideal sildenafil chewable tablets choice for those who need a fast-acting medication. Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is a common respiratory disease of horses characterized by bronchoconstriction, mucus production, and bronchospasm. Pulmonary hypertension is known to occur secondary to recurrent airway obstruction in horses. The development of pulmonary hypertension in RAO-affected horses is well-documented, however, it is not known how rapidly increases in pulmonary artery pressure occur after the onset of RAO.1 The subsequent changes in the pulmonary arteries accompanying this syndrome can lead to heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension involves thickening of the pulmonary arteries and an associated increase in blood pressure. While this has been a well-documented finding in humans with severe asthma, until recently, it had not been detected in horses. Its use is now one of the standard treatments for erectile dysfunction, including for males with diabetes mellitus. Tentative evidence suggests that sildenafil may help males who experience antidepressant-induced erectile dysfunction.

  • Sildenafil can improve exercise capacity in pulmonary hypertension patients.
  • Regular monitoring may be required for long-term use.
  • Be aware of potential side effects related to blood pressure changes.

While sildenafil improves some markers of disease in people with pulmonary arterial hypertension, it does not appear to affect the risk of death or serious side effects.

Condition Caution / Notes Risk Factors
Cardiovascular disease Use with caution Heart failure, recent MI
Concomitant nitrate use Absolute contraindication Risk of severe hypotension
Severe hepatic impairment May require dose adjustment Reduced clearance
Retinitis Pigmentosa Cautious use Potential for vision disturbances

Sildenafil and other PDE5 inhibitors are used off-label to alleviate vasospasm and treat severe ischemia and ulcers in fingers and toes for people with secondary Raynaud's phenomenon;[9][21] these drugs have moderate efficacy for reducing the frequency and duration of vasospastic episodes.

[9] As of 2016,[update] their role more generally in Raynaud's was not clear. Sildenafil has shown some potential for improving exercise performance at high altitudes. However, its overall efficacy is not clear.

What other drugs will affect sildenafil?

Severe equine asthma or RAO is characterized by airway inflammation, coughing and labored breathing. The condition is usually triggered by dust and mold in hay and other environmental factors. RAO-induced pulmonary hypertension is also thought to be a factor in exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), whose incidence in racehorses is very high. Based on airway endoscopic examination, it is reported that >75% of racing Thoroughbreds experience EIPH.2 NOTE: The Association of Racing Commissioners International Uniform Classification Guidelines for Foreign Substances has designated Sildenafil Citrate a CLASS 3 DRUG. It is illegal in horse racing due to the fact that it increases cardiac output and can boost a race horse’s performance.

2Manohar, M., Goetz, T. L -NAME does not affect exercise-induced pulmonary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses. Journal American Physiological Society, 8750-7587/98 1998. Sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra among others, is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. [4][8] It is also sometimes used off-label for the treatment of certain symptoms in secondary Raynaud's phenomenon. Sildenafil has been studied for high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), but its use is currently not recommended for that indication. In clinical trials, the most common adverse effects of sildenafil use included headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, and impaired vision, including photophobia and blurred vision. [4] Some sildenafil users have complained of seeing everything tinted blue (cyanopsia).

Brand Name Manufacturer Typical Dosage Form Price Range (USD) Notes
Viagra Pfizer 25, 50, 100 mg $10-$20 per pill Most well-known sildenafil brand
Revatio Pfizer 20 mg (for PAH) Varies Approved for pulmonary hypertension
Sildenafil Sandoz Sandoz (Novartis) 50, 100 mg Lower cost option Generic version
Kamagra Ajanta Pharma 50, 100 mg Lower cost Popular generic alternative

[24] This cyanopsia can be explained because sildenafil, while selective for PDE5, does have some affinity for PDE6, which is the phosphodiesterase found in the retina.

Side Effects

These tablets are designed to dissolve quickly in the mouth upon contact with saliva, allowing for efficient absorption of the medication through the oral mucosa for rapid onset of therapeutic effects. This formulation eliminates the need for water or swallowing, making it a convenient and efficient way to take the medication. Sildenafil 100 mg Oral Dissolve Tablets are used to treat a variety of conditions, including erectile dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, Raynaud's phenomenon, interstitial cystitis, and priapism. This medication works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the blood vessels, allowing them to widen and increasing blood flow to certain areas of the body. This increased blood flow can help to improve symptoms associated with these conditions.

Clinics in Geriatric Medicine

Our knowledgeable team of compounding pharmacists is here to help you find the best treatment option for your condition. Sildenafil 100 mg Oral Dissolve Tablets can be used for a variety of conditions beyond those listed above. It can be used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. It can also be used to treat Raynaud's Syndrome, a condition that causes the fingers and toes to become cold and numb due to reduced blood flow. Additionally, it can be used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that causes the prostate to become enlarged. Patients thus taking the drug may experience colorvision abnormalities. Some complained of blurriness and loss of peripheral vision.

Information & Authors

[9] It is unclear if it is effective for treating sexual dysfunction in females. [8] It can be taken orally (swallowed by mouth), intravenously (injection into a vein), or through the sublingual route (dissolved under the tongue). [8][10] Onset when taken orally is typically within twenty minutes and lasts for about two hours. Common side effects include headaches, heartburn, and flushed skin. [8] Caution is advised in those with cardiovascular disease.

[8] Rare but serious side effects include vision problems, hearing loss, and prolonged erection (priapism) that can lead to damage to the penis. [8] Sildenafil should not be taken by people on nitric oxide donors such as nitroglycerin, as this may result in a serious drop in blood pressure. Sildenafil acts by blocking phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that promotes breakdown of cGMP, which regulates blood flow in the penis. [8] It requires sexual arousal to work, and does not by itself cause or increase sexual arousal. [8] It also results in dilation of the blood vessels in the lungs.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking sildenafil?

Pfizer originally discovered the sildenafil 50g medication in 1989 while looking for a treatment for angina. [11] It was approved for medical use in the United States and in the European Union in 1998. [5][8][11][12] In 2023, it was the 151st most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3 million prescriptions. [13][14] It is available as a generic medication. [15][16] In the United Kingdom, it is available as a pharmacy medicine. In July 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated labeling for tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and sildenafil (Viagra) to reflect a small number of post-marketing reports of sudden vision loss, while acknowledging that "...it is not possible to determine whether these oral medicines for erectile dysfunction were the cause of the loss of eyesight or whether the problem is related to other factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or to a combination of these problems. "[25] A careful review of pooled data from clinical trials containing well documented information about the dose and duration of exposure to the drug for a large number of patients, yields no evidence for an increased risk of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or other adverse ocular events associated with PDE5 inhibitor use. Rare but serious adverse effects found through postmarketing surveillance include prolonged erections, severe low blood pressure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), ventricular arrhythmias, stroke, increased intraocular pressure, and sudden hearing loss. [4] In October 2007, the FDA announced that the labeling for all PDE5 inhibitors, including sildenafil, required a more prominent warning of the potential risk of sudden hearing loss.

  • Some men may experience minor flushing after taking sildenafil.
  • If an adverse reaction occurs, stop medication and contact your doctor.
  • Be aware of possible symptoms like sudden vision loss.
