PDE5 is an enzyme that is found in many parts of the body including in the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum, prostate, bladder, the vascular and visceral smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, urethra, platelets, kidney, lung, cerebellum, heart, liver, testis, seminal vesicle, and pancreas. Sildenafil is structurally similar to cGMP and prevents degradation of cGMP by competitively binding and inhibiting activity of PDE5. When PDE5 is inhibited, cGMP accumulates and leads to smooth muscle relaxation. In the corpus cavernosum, this leads to penile erection. In the pulmonary system, it leads to vasodilation in the pulmonary arteries. A Wells Pharmacy Network pharmacist will be happy to answer any questions.

At a glance

The stimulation of uterine contractions causes more oxytocin to be released. As more oxytocin is released it positively influences even more release of oxytocin. This release of oxytocin is called positive feedback which is much different than how many hormones work in the endocrine system. Oxytocin administered exogenously causes the same response as endogenously produced oxytocin. Not only does oxytocin stimulate uterine contractions, but it also causes contractions of myoepithelial cells in the alveolar ducts found in female breast tissue.

Most Recent Events

These contractions force milk from these ducts into even larger sinuses, which subsequently enables milk expulsion. When a baby attempts to latch onto the mother’s breast it causes oxytocin secretion into the blood in the same manner as vaginal delivery; instead of uterine contractions, milk is ejected from the breast. Similar to the actions of oxytocin in the uterus to stimulate contractions during delivery, milk-ejection from breast tissue occurs due to positive feedback. In the brain, it is proposed that oxytocin stimulates social and sexual function by its activity in many areas of the brain including its activity on neurotransmitters. Phosphodiesterase (PDE) has many isoforms and is an enzyme that has many functions in the body including degrading the effect of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). If your healthcare provider just prescribed sildenafil citrate (generic Viagra®) to treat your erectile dysfunction (ED) symptoms, you’re probably excited to get your mojo back. But it’s also understandable if your head is swimming with questions.

Additionally, a doctor may deter you from using BlueChew if they don’t think it’s a good option for you. BlueChew’s chewable sildenafil and Viagra contain the same active ingredient and function fairly similarly — they both improve blood flow. So the effectiveness largely depends on the person taking it. The difference between the two is that BlueChew is an online service, provides chewable tablets, and offers 30-mg and 45-mg options. Viagra comes in 25-mg, 50-mg, and 100-mg options. Like other PDE5 inhibitors, or phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, sildenafil is a safe treatment for ED, if used as directed. It’s been Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for this use since 1998, after all.

Disclaimer: Images are for reference only; actual products may vary. Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior portion of the pituitary gland. Oxytocin is made synthetically and has activity identical to natural oxytocin. Oxytocin stimulates contraction of smooth muscle in the uterus during labor and stimulates the alveolar ducts to eject milk after it has been produced in the breast. Thus, because of the actions of oxytocin on the uterus, it has been used to induce labor, aid in the delivery of the placenta, and control postpartum bleeding. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. These medications block the PDE5 enzyme, resulting in the widening of your blood vessels to promote blood flow to the penis. This increased blood flow results in an erection. However, sildenafil doesn’t affect your libido. You still need to be aroused to get and maintain an erection long enough to yield satisfying sex.

  • Sildenafil tablets are not a cure for erectile dysfunction but help achieve an erection.
  • Take the tablet 15-20 minutes before sexual activity for best results.
  • Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice while using sildenafil.

Healthcare providers can prescribe sildenafil tablets in different doses.

  • Sildenafil works by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5, helping to relax blood vessels.
  • Do not take these tablets with nitrates or certain medications without consulting a doctor.
  • These tablets are suitable for people who have difficulty swallowing pills.

A typical starting dose of sildenafil is 50 milligrams, which you’d take 30 minutes to four hours before sexual activity.

Rahel Stoll
