For many women, sexual desire goes up and down over the years, often tied to changes in relationships, stress, and physical changes like pregnancy and menopause. But roughly 10% of women deal with a low sex drive that causes them distress. It’s a condition known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).

as Addyi) is taken as an oral pill and must be taken daily for effect, which is shown to be minimal compared to placebo. The more worrisome side effects may include sleepiness and fainting as well as negative interactions with alcohol and other prescription medications commonly used by sexually active women. Bremelanotide (marketed in the U.S. as Vyleesi) is taken about 45 minutes before a sexual encounter and is self-administered as an injection in the thigh or abdomen. The best available evidence, which is limited, also shows minimal effect on the main outcome — number of satisfying sexual events — for women as compared to placebo.

Nausea is a common side effect, which seems counter-productive. If you ask a nauseated woman if she is having sexual thoughts or fantasies or if she is interested in having sex in the next 45 minutes, there is a high likelihood she would say no. Q: Viagra and other drugs have been on the market for years to help men with sexual performance/health/function, but there’s been limited options for women. How important is this FDA approval for women's sexual health? A: Many women (and men) use substances like alcohol and marijuana (or related products) to address libido and related sexual dysfunction problems. There are a few over-the-counter supplements that aim to treat the problem, which have limited, mostly unproven, effects. But in recent years, the FDA has approved two prescription drugs to treat HSDD. These treatments are often referred to as “female Viagra” -- a nod to one of the medicines that men can take for sexual problems. But they’re not much like Viagra at all. In fact, they work very differently inside the body. “In men, Viagra fixes a ‘plumbing problem,’ if you will,” says Judith Volkar, MD, of the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh. Viagra and other similar drugs treat erectile dysfunction, when a man can’t get or keep an erection that’s firm enough to have sex. These men often still have sexual desire, but they just can’t get their bodies to respond physically when they want to have sex.

The drugs help by relaxing the muscles in the penis and boosting blood flow so an erection can happen. “I often say you can picture men's sexual desire as a light switch, and women's sexual desire as the cockpit of a 747,” she says. “There are more factors at play in female sexual desire.” As a result, the treatment for HSDD requires a more nuanced approach. The drugs the FDA has approved for HSDD are: Flibanserin (Addyi): It’s a pill you take every evening.

Both drugs boost the activity of chemical messengers in your brain, called neurotransmitters, that are key to helping you feel aroused. You take flibanserin every day, whether you plan to have sex or not. You inject bremelanotide only when you need it. It’s important to note that neither drug makes sex better. They just make you more likely to feel in the mood. Your doctor may recommend that you try sex education cenforce100 and counseling along with the medication. You may also need hormone therapy, if you deal with any physical issues that affect sex, such as vaginal dryness.

Pill Name Common Side Effects Serious Risks Contraindications
LibiBoost Headache, nausea None reported Heart issues
Yohimbine Pills Anxiety, increased heart rate High blood pressure Hypertension
Ginseng Pills Insomnia, upset stomach None significant Diabetes, estrogen-sensitive conditions
Flibanserin Dizziness, fatigue Hypotension Alcohol use, liver disease

Your doctor needs to diagnose you with HSDD in order to prescribe either drug. They can do that by asking screening questions, such as: • Have you been satisfied with your level of sexual desire before?• Has your sex drive gotten lower?• Does your lack of libido bother you?• Would you like it to increase?• Are there other things (medication, pregnancy, surgery, stress) that could be affecting your sex drive?

Fits discreetly into your life

Safe sex requires consent, so using substances to treat sexual function problems that can impair judgment or diminish a person’s agency over her body is worrisome and adds risk for both partners. FDA approval of treatments for female sexual function should avail women of treatments that meet rigorous standards for safety and effectiveness and should protect women from risks associated with unregulated, unsupervised, unproven treatments that could be a waste of their money at best and harmful at worst. Q: Both Addyi and Vyleesi have been incorrectly called "the female Viagra" by a lot of news outlets. A: Viagra and other popular erectile dysfunction drugs like it help men with what amounts to a plumbing problem that limits their ability to get and maintain an erection. You see that when blood flows to their nipples and their clitoris during arousal.

Neither Addyi nor Vyleesi target this female physiology. Instead, the medications are designed to increase sex drive. Vyleesi activates melanocortin receptors, Addyi targets serotonin receptors, but we still don’t have a full understanding of how these medications affect women's sexual desire. For both drugs, the effect is modest at best — these are not magic wands for libido. It’s wrong and confusing to call these drugs "female Viagra." Doctors, women and the public at large are less informed about female sexual function than we all should be. If you answer “yes” to the first four questions, and there’s no other cause for your low sex drive, you probably have HSDD.

Volkar says the distress that a woman feels about her sex drive is often the driving factor in whether or not she needs to take medicine for it.

The one you should take mostly depends on what works best for your lifestyle. “There are certainly women who have no interest in injections,” Volkar says. “Others have no interest in taking a pill every day.” It’s best to talk to your doctor about which one would work for you. Researchers have mainly studied how the medicines work in women who haven’t gone through menopause yet. So the FDA approved both drugs for premenopausal women only.
