What happens if a woman takes Viagra?

Sexual problems may be due to trouble with arousal, a lack of desire or both. Many factors can affect sexual desire in women. Many women find that the stresses of daily life lower their desire for sex. Highs and lows in sexual desire may go along with the beginning or end of a relationship or with major life changes, such as pregnancy or menopause. For some women, orgasm can be hard to reach.

In people who are postmenopausal

This can cause worries that lead to a loss of interest in sex. Desire often is linked to a sense of closeness between partners, as well as sexual issues from the past. Some chronic conditions, such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis, can cause changes in arousal or orgasm. If you have trouble with sexual desire or response, talk with a member of your healthcare team. You might want to talk to a sex therapist. The FDA states that Vyleesi medication can treat FSIAD in premenopausal females. A person injects it into their thigh or stomach at least 45 minutes before having sex. The effects can last for up to 24 hours. People should not use the drug more than eight times per month. The table below compares Vyleesi and Addyi: Viagra is not FDA approved for use in females. To understand why, it can help to understand what Viagra was designed to do in the male body. Usually, after sexual stimulation in a male, there is a release of nitric oxide, which increases levels of a regulatory agent in cells called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This increase in cGMP causes smooth muscle relaxation, and it leads to increased blood flow to the penis, resulting in an erection. In males, an erection goes down when an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) breaks down. Anyone who would like to try Viagra should ask a medical professional, who may prescribe the drug off-label. Vyleesi targets melanocortin receptors, which are linked to sexual function.

Ospemifene (Osphena)

If a woman accidentally took Viagra, there wouldn’t likely be any lasting harmful effects. If you’re having trouble in your sex life, you may wonder if a pill could help. Though Viagra isn’t FDA approved for women, it’s sometimes used off-label to enhance arousal. Other medications may be able to help, too, including Addyi, Vyleesi, and Osphena.
